Are Antibiotics Making Americans Fat?

Are Antibiotics Making Americans Fat?

'Public health researchers have long maintained that the primary cause of America’s obesity epidemic is the combination of our increasingly high-calorie diet (hello, Cheesecake Factory’s Oreo Dream Extreme Cheesecake) and an increasingly inactive lifestyle (there you are, couch). And most experts still maintain that. Yet a number of scientists believe there’s something else—or, really, a number of something elses—bringing its weight to bear.

In other words, if the recent research reported by Kennedy points to routine antibiotic use as a smoking gun, it is likely just one in the fusillade of causes behind America’s seemingly ever-expanding waistline.'

The Surprising Reason Americans Might Be Obese, Anxious and Depressed

'Do you remember the "hygiene hypothesis" of the late 1990s? It theorized that humans had so over-sanitized their environment with disinfectants and hand cleansers, our immune systems were no longer doing their jobs. So many consumer products like toothpaste, hand and dish soap, laundry detergents and even clothes now include antibiotics, said the theory, we seldom encounter the "bad" germs our immune systems are supposed to recognize and fight.'

Are Millions of Americans Being Poisoned by Their Own Dental Fillings?

"I was pretty much housebound for a couple years,” she recalls. “I just didn't have the strength to leave the house by myself. I was able to keep my house fragrance-free but I had trouble being in a crowd, like on a bus or in an audience where you're sitting next to people because so many people wear fragrances. Or walking on the streets, the car exhaust would be overpowering."

A friend suggested her problem might be mercury exposure from her dental fillings, but she dismissed the idea. After all, her neurologist had already tested her blood for mercury and did not find anything to worry about.

Death of Americans: The Medical System is Now the Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.

  http://www.davidicke.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/14big_pharma.jpg

'Too many patients suffer harm instead of healing in U.S. medicine. That’s why ProPublica’s reporters have investigated everything from deadly dialysis centers and dangerous hospitals to the failure of state boards to discipline incompetent nurses.'--ProPublica

'In 2010, the Office of Inspector General for Health and Human Services said that bad hospital care contributed to the deaths of 180,000 patients in Medicare alone in a given year.

Now comes a study in the current issue of the Journal of Patient Safety that says the numbers may be much higher — between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year who go to the hospital for care suffer some type of preventable harm that contributes to their death, the study says.

That would make medical errors the third-leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease, which is the first, and cancer, which is second.'

70 Million Americans Set to Take a Statin and the Flawed 'Evidence'

70 Million Americans Set to Take a Statin and the Flawed 'Evidence'

'The American National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), via the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have just announced a radical change to the way that statins will now be prescribed. Despite the apparent prestige of the organizations disseminating the new guidelines, this marks the beginning of another dark chapter in the history of medicine.

As we all know, the guidelines were previously based on arbitrary cholesterol numbers. This focus on getting millions of peoples' cholesterol levels below an arbitrary threshold has caused a great deal of harm. The situation was already horrific. But now, it is set to get much worse.

70 Million Americans Set to Take a Statin and the Flawed 'Evidence'

Now that the cholesterol thresholds have been driven down, the next attempt to convert even more healthy people into patients is to put less emphasis on the cholesterol numbers and just start medicating almost everyone regardless. It might seem like I'm exaggerating, but I'm not.'

'The first-ever federal health study about sleeping pill usage suggests that sleep is growing ever more elusive for Americans.

According to the latest information, between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from sleep deprivation, with increasing numbers relying on prescription sleep aids.

The CDC report, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005 to 2010), found that nearly nine million Americans take prescription sleeping pills in pursuit of good night’s rest.

Usage differences were found based on age, gender, race and ethnicity. The report listed the following key findings:'

An Unexpected Reason Americans Are Overweight

'The documentary Fed Up, released in theaters on May 9, untangles the roots of obesity in America’s youth. Directed by Stephanie Soechtig and narrated by Katie Couric, Fed Up does not shrink from telling viewers how the government’s decades-long capitulation to Big Food and its lobbyists has fostered an epidemic of excess pounds. The national focus on diet, diet foods and exercise is not abating the obesity epidemic and actually making it worse, charges the film.'

Americans – Why Do You Keep Refrigerating Your Eggs?

'If you’re an American, you probably store eggs in the refrigerator – and wouldn’t think of doing it any other way.

Yet, the US is one of the only countries where chicken eggs are kept refrigerated. In much of Europe, for instance, eggs are often stored right on the counter, at room temperature.

But then, US eggs would be illegal in Europe due to an egg-washing process that may actually make them more susceptible to contamination with bacteria like Salmonella.'
